CHAPTER 12

A TALK WITH NICHELLE NICHOLS

Life at the end of Star Trek as they knew it. That was much on the minds of people when Nichelle Nichols was interviewed on the impending release of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

It had to be asked. Everyone else was being asked, if for no other reason than to see whether there was a consensus or a division of opinion on whether Star Trek VI was indeed the final flight for the original and much revered cast of the starship Enterprise.

"It could be, and then again, who knows? I guess I feel like everybody else does. I've been on this press junket for the last week and the press is very excited about the film and everyone else who I know has seen it feels very strongly about it. They didn't know what to expect and came away very excited about it and would like for there to be another.

"I think the best ones that I liked of the film series are 2, 4 and 6. So I think what they ought to do is cancel 7 and go directly to 8! I stole that from Walter Koenig so you may hear him say it. I know the fans are going to be excited. They're going to love this movie. Perhaps there will be [another feature]. If not, this is a wonderful one to have ended the series of films with, and it won't bother me one way or the other. I've loved doing all the films. Each one is a miracle to me."

What still makes Star Trek so popular after twenty-five years?

"It's really amazing that twenty-five years later the show is so popular that we all are still dedicated to giving the fans as much of ourselves as our careers will allow. It's sort of a wondrous, wonderful thing that people took to it so strongly and felt that this is the kind of future that they could subscribe to and wanted to believe in.

"You have to remember that we came at a time when the country was in a lot of turmoil. In the mid-sixties we were fighting for civil rights. We were fighting against the war in Vietnam. We were fighting against or opposing a third world war that could annihilate the whole world as we know it. And yet here was a program saying that not only did we not destroy ourselves in the 20th century but we made it into the 23rd century. And we not only made it but we made it in peace, that we had gotten our act together and were going forth in peaceful exploration," Nichelle explained.
